October 2006 Owner Spotlight - Bob JohnsonDoes this look like a sail boat? In 2002, Bob Johnson was looking for a hobby. He narrowed his search down to two possibilities: a vintage Porsche or a sailboat. After rationalizing that he couldn't fit a sailboat in the garage, he opted for the car. And what a spectacular car he chose! Bob purchased this amazing 1959 356A in June, 2002 after an extensive search on the internet. Originally silver, the car was delivered to its first owner in South Carolina. Bob found the car in rough but serviceable shape at the renowned Porsche restoration shop of Gary Kempton in Crawfordville, Florida. Kempton began a ground-up restoration replacing many rusted-out sections and restoring the body to better than factory condition. The exterior sports perfect aquamarine metallic paint while the inside was treated to a generous helping of creamy caramel-colored leather. No vinyl here. All of the glass was replaced except for the rear window which is original. The engine is from a 1963 "C" and has a few key modifications for a little extra pep. To cope with the desert heat, Bob added an aluminum oil cooler and remote oil filter. After two years of labor, the car was shipped to Las Vegas in April 2004. Perhaps the best part of this story is that Bob actually drives this car. This is no garage queen (although you could eat off the underside). Bob regularly drives it to work and on the weekends. Now that the Porsche bug has bitten, he is contemplating another P-car for the garage. This time he has his sights on a more modern example, maybe a Cayman or Boxter.
