Factory Chassis Micrometers help us identify a misalignment in the body structure of the Porsche 356 or Porsche 911 on the micrometer. Should a misalignment be identified, and depending on how far out of alignment the structure is, realignment can take place. However, if the body structure is too far out of alignment, parts of the structure will be replaced.
The jack stand approach can miss issues that are discovered by the micrometers. For example: At the outer ends of the rear torsion tube, there are hollow box sections with heavy metal plates inside of them. Where a jack stand approach can miss a misalignment as a result of warped plates inside these hollow box sections, a micrometer will notice them, and then it's just a matter of locating the issue and correcting it (See the
356 Registry Volume 23 #4 November/December 1999 article on our website for the story). These micrometers enable our master metal and body personnel to restore the alignment of the structure to perfection.
